Abstract: Flow cytometry and cell sorting has been applied to a wide variety of different problems in plant biotechnology and genomics. Applications of flow cytometry and sorting have been particularly boosted by the development of methods for expression of intrinsically fluorescent markers within transgenic organisms, of which the Green Fluorescent Protein and its derivatives, are the most popular and important. Flow cytometric analysis and sorting applications have also been developed for use with subcellular organelles, including nuclei, mitochondria, and chloroplasts, based either on intrinsic fluorescence (chloroplasts), in vivo GFP expression and targeting, or staining with particular fluorochromes.
