Abstract: The article deals with the role of monoterpenes in the environment and their biosynthesis in plants. Monoterpenes play a significant role in plant defence and communication with the environment, especially with insect pests and pollinators. They are also considered bioactive compounds due to a great impact on human health. Monoterpenes show antimicrobial and antifungal properties and may also prevent cancer.
